The main menu of the RPSS helps associates establish goals and ways to achieve them. The menu items, with representations that mirror the real world - as opposed to an abstract icon - aid associates in selecting appropriate tasks. For example, if an associate needs to send a message, the Communicate section of the main menu provides cues.
Context is a critical design element in the menu. The cash register provides appropriate representation for financial tasks, as does the calendar for time and scheduling tasks.
Within the RPSS' embedded applications, underlying goals are also supported. Since selling shoes is at the heart of Payless' business, the Lot Locator tool assists in achieving the goal of increased sales. If a shoe cannot be found within the store, the Lot Locator provides a means with which goals are achieved.
