Best Representation
The best representation keeps the following to a minimum:
The number of rules to remember ...
The number of calculations to perform ...
The reliance on memory ...
The number of inferences that must be made ...
A way to find the best representation:
1. Write a clear statement of the problem.
2. Articulate a mission statement that addresses the problem.
3. Create a process model.
4. Create a diversity model.
5. Choose an appropriate metaphorical performance space.
6. Use your imagination: draw on your experience with toys, games, gadgets, work, things...to identify something that reminds you of the process and people who have to do it. Ask the problem solvers...(!)
7. Consider the kind and presentation of information to “get it” quickly.
8. Take a shot at creating a representation.
9. Try making another representation.
10. ...and another....
11. Test usability.
12. Make a decision based on your usability results.
…repeat steps 7 through 12 over and over and over...
