Hypertext Exercises
Handouts will be distributed in class.
The exercises
A. Study the section from MIL-STD-1472D. The numbering scheme looks hierarchical, but is it? How does this pose problems for transformation into hierarchical or outline browser form? How useful are the headings of each paragraph as node names?
Two cross-references--one explicit, one implicit--pose problems in paragraph 5.4.2.2.1.3 from the perspective of multi-document hypertexts. Why?
B. Law review articles embody an incredibly rich cross-referencing and footnoting style (and lawyers use Latin; infra means below, supra means above). How many of these different kinds of cross-references and footnotes can you locate?
-”ordinary”
-footnote that cites another doc
-footnote that cites another part of the article
-footnote that cites another footnote
-footnote that cites another footnote that contains the citation to another doc’s footnote
Discuss the node organization implications...
C. Compare the article Range of Light Intensities Confronting the Eye with the Encyclopedia Britannica article Accounting in terms of ease of conversion and utility of having the article on-line. Which one would be easier to put on line? Why?
D. Compare the table of contents from Engineering Data Compendium with that of The World According to Garp. Which is more appropriately transformed into a hierarchical browser? Why?
E. Is hypertext ever appropriate for such works as The World According to Garp?
